Why does the QR code in the "Download Artifact" popup show 2 hours of validity even when it may be expired?

Last updated: August 31, 2026

Context

When opening the "Download Artifact" popup to share a QR code with a client, the popup displays a message indicating the QR code is "valid for 2 hours." However, if the page has been open for an extended period, the QR code may actually already be expired, even though the validity label still shows 2 hours remaining.

Answer

This is a known limitation of how the QR code validity label works. Here's what you need to know:

  • A new QR code is generated each time you refresh the full page. The QR code remains the same as long as the page tab stays open — reopening the popup dialog does not generate a new QR code.

  • The "valid for 2 hours" label is static. It always displays the initial 2-hour validity window and does not count down in real time. This means if you have kept the page open for more than 2 hours, the QR code may already be expired even though the label still shows 2 hours of validity.

To ensure you are sharing a valid QR code, refresh the full page before opening the "Download Artifact" popup and generating or sharing the QR code. This will create a fresh QR code with a new 2-hour validity window.

We are aware that the static validity label can be misleading and are working on improvements to make this clearer in the future.
